چکیده

An attempt has been made to assess the e ciency of image data compression by wavelet transform encoding using National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) images. Raw and derived images were compressed to various levels and a number of parameters in the decompressed images compared with those obtained using raw data as a yardstick against which to measure the loss of information due to compression. Unsupervised classiŽ cation, Normalized Di€ erenceVegetation Index (NDVI) values and brightness temperatures appeared to su€ er little degradation and only for fractal dimensions was there signiŽ cant loss of integrity at compressionrates of up to a factor of 32. The general conclusion from a visual inspection of the e€ ect of such compressions on artiŽ cially generated geometrical imagettes conŽ rms the e€ ectiveness of this method of compression.

Compression of AVHRR images by wavelet packets

AVHRR is an imager flying on polar meteorological satellites that, due to its spatial resolution (about 1 km at Nadir view), produces a huge amount of data. A method based on the wavelet packet transform is devised to compress AVHRR images. The method is driven by the compression error (application dependent), so that different types of images have the same quality. The best basis wavelet packe...

Implementation of VlSI Based Image Compression Approach on Reconfigurable Computing System - A Survey

Image data require huge amounts of disk space and large bandwidths for transmission. Hence, imagecompression is necessary to reduce the amount of data required to represent a digital image. Thereforean efficient technique for image compression is highly pushed to demand. Although, lots of compressiontechniques are available, but the technique which is faster, memory efficient and simple, surely...

Tropical Forest Mapping by Radar Remote Sensing: Operational Applications at Global Scale

Large scale and operational applications based on contiguous coverage with SAR data require a set of dedicated techniques in terms of signal handling and product interpretation. The GRFM SAR map of the West African rainforest domain is derived from some 340 JERS-1 SAR images acquired in a time span of 45 days. The original data with a pixel spacing of 12.5 m are spatially compressed by wavelet ...

Multi-scale feature tracking in sequential satellite images with wavelet analysis to measure sea surface currents in the Gulf of St. Lawrence

Measuring sea surface currents is a technological challenge in oceanography. Feature tracking in time series of remote sensing imagery has been proposed as a way to address this problem. The most commonly used approach is the maximum cross-correlation (MCC) method, originally developed to track cloud motion. We propose a new technique that makes use of Daubechies wavelet analysis combined with ...

The thermal evaluation of snow line and identification of potential areas of snow falling in the Alborz Mountains with NOAA-AVHRR images

Abstract The extention of Snow cover and its spatial and temporal changes considered as a basic parameter in climatic and hydrologic studies. Data from satellite images due to the low cost and the large extention of cover are, effectively help the identifying of the snowy basins. Since the satellites are able to imaging a surface at different times, this will allow snow survey studies to inves...
